U.S. Video Games Industry Undergoes 20 Percent Reduction in Sales during July

The statistics released by NPD, a market analysis firm, regarding the monthly video games sales, during the month of July, is not much to boast about. In comparison to the same time last year, the sale of video games, their accessories and different hardware have dropped down to nearly 20 percent, reported NPD, reaching a total of only $707.7 million. However, this was still not the worst. The sale of portable game systems and game consoles were hit the hardest, falling by 29 percent to a mere total of $223 million.

Details of the figures showed that the fall, in sales, was affected more by the hardware and accessories than the actual games themselves. Sale of game accessories fell by 8 percent; hauling in $127.8 million, while software sales reduced by 30 percent.

The most popular games, bought by majority of the people, were Disney’s Cars 2 video game and EA’s NCAA Football 12.

Although, the video games industry has suffered through a difficult month, the marketing firm believes that this just may be the worst it could get, estimating 2011 to end at almost the same line as the previous year, if not a few minor percentages short.

An important factor to consider however, when looking at the sales figures collected by NPD, is that the firm does not take into account the sales of online games. Many gamers have now started to buy downloadable games, or play games, which are accessible on the internet, Smartphones and tablets, or on social networking websites. Moreover, the firm does not reflect sale of second hand games.
