LOS ANGELES – Microsoft Corp. showcased an array of videogames and other offerings designed to take advantage of its Kinect motion and voice-control device, as Microsoft seeks to boost sales of the product.
At an event at the E3 games conference here, the Redmond, Wash., company and its partners demonstrated new titles that include a "Star Wars" game that will allow players to engage in light saber battles by slashing their arms in the air or move objects telekinetically with hand motions. Electronic Arts Inc. said four upcoming sports games, including its Tiger Woods golf, Madden football, FIFA soccer and an unannounced title, will also use Kinect to let players control action with their voices and body commands.
Microsoft said a new version due this fall of its Xbox Live online entertainment service for the Xbox 360 console will give members access to video from Google Inc.'s YouTube service and a variety of live television events, including Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts.
Don Mattrick, the president of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, said Microsoft has about 100 new partners that have agreed to provide live video for Xbox Live, agreements that it will announce in the near future. In an interview, Mr. Mattrick said this year will be the biggest ever for Microsoft's games business in terms of revenue.
The company said it will add a search function to Xbox Live that uses Microsoft's Bing search technology that will allow people to search through its growing library of online video, music and games. The search function will use voice recognition technology built into Kinect.
Microsoft has sold more than 10 million Kinect devices and more than 55 million Xbox 360 consoles.
